2007 SPORTSMAN CLASS RULES

(An economy division for limited experienced drivers.)

 Bodies  

1.    Any 1968 or newer body style.

a)    Radios permitted.

2.    Minimum wheelbase will be 108 inches.  No fabricated front or rear clips.

3.    Stock equipment only.  No polishing or grinding on any car engine parts.

4.    Battery must be mounted in a safe manner and must be approved by track official.

5.    Must have emergency cut-off switch in car near driver.

6.    May run metal aftermarket body.  Must keep stock firewall & stock floor pan.  Must be in original position on frame.

7.    May run fabricated fire wall and floor pan, but must add 50 pounds.

8.    6” maximum spoiler height.

 Suspension

 1.    May run Ford 9-inch rear end.  All rear ends must be stock.  No floaters or quick changes.

2.    Automatic or manual transmission.  No powerglides.  Automatics must have operational torque converter.  No cutting of manual transmission teeth.

3.    Any Sway bar, maximum diameter 1.250.  No Spline bars.

4.    Wedge bolts permitted.

5.    May run after market A-arms and upper A-frame mounts.

6.    Maximum track width of 65 inches center to center.

 7.    Lower control arms must be stock AND must be in stock location with no modification of any kind.

8.    SHOCKS: One hundred dollar claim per shock. Drive must be within 3 places up or down to claim shock.

9.    Minimum frame height is 6 inches with the driver.

10.     May run front loop bar tied to cage with one bar in front of A-arm.  May run rubber nose and tail sections.

11.     All flammable material inside car must be removed.

12.     All glass must be removed, i.e. door glass, headlights, etc.  Car must have full windshield.  May run lexan windshield.  Must run one brace minimum behind windshield.

13.     Driver must have racing seat in car.  Must be safely secured with a minimum of six (6) 3/8-inch bolts to roll cage.  Must be approved by inspector for safety.

14.     Drivers must have seat belts and shoulder harnesses over both shoulders with three (3) inch minimum width.

15.     Each car must have minimum 2-pound fire extinguisher with gauge and a quick release mounted securely in car within reach of the driver while belted in car.

16.     Car must have four (4) point roll cage with diagonal bar behind driver with three (3) roll bars in left door & two (2) in right door minimum.

a)    Top of roll cage may extend to rear frame behind fuel cell.

b)   Roll bars must be 1 ¾ inch diameter and .090 tubing.  Gussets required in left door bars.  Bars must be padded in driver’s area (legs & head bars & side bars). May X inside the frame rails.

c)    Front hoop bar must not extend past radiator support.

17.           Rear view mirror allowed.

18.           Doors must be bolted or welded closed.

19.           Left side window net is required.  Must have a quick release that releases from the top.

20.     Engine Setback rule: Engine may be moved so the #1 plug is even with the wedge bolt.

21.     May run solid engine and transmission mounts.

22.     No plastic oil pressure lines – Metal only.

23.     Fire suits are required.

24.     You may stub rear clip to the hump

 25.                       Fuel cell required, 22-gallon maximum.  Must be mounted in a safe and approved manner, meaning securely strapped by placing two (2) straps long ways and two (2) straps crosswise around tank and bolting straps to trunk floor.  Straps must be 1/8 inch x 1-inch thickness in width.  Straps must be mounted in center.  Bar protecting fuel cell must be no lower than 1 inch below fuel cell.  Bottom of fuel cell must be no lower than 8 inches from ground. Track official must approve mounting.

a)    Must have rollover fuel valve.

b)   Must run Beech Bend Raceway racing fuel.  No additives allowed.

 

 Sportsman Beech Bend Engine

1.    Maximum overbore .060 thousandths. No more than 3.48 stroke.

2.    Pistons must be flat top and have .250 to first ring land. Need 2 eyebrows

a)    No polishing of rods.

b)   May run aftermarket stock type steel rods. (No H beams)

c)    May balance engine.  Must maintain one virgin rod & piston.

d)   No racing or light weight pistons (JE, Ross, race eng., etc)

3.    May run after market crankshaft, no polishing, knife edging, etc.  Crank must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs.

4.    Minimum of .010 deck clearance.

5.    Heads must be strictly stock.

a)    No porting or polishing anywhere. No deburring.

b)   No racing or high performance heads.  Maximum 1.94 intake valve.

c)    No cutting of heads to install larger valve springs.  No more than a single valve spring with damper.

d)   No Angle plug or Aluminum heads. No 461, 492, 461x.  No performance heads.

e)    Vortec heads allowed.

f)     62cc minimum for Chevy.  57 cc minimum for Ford.

6.    Cam must be hydraulic.  The cam lift will be maximum lift including rocker arm. 1.5 rockers.  Approved cam total lift is .450 Chevy.  Ford - .480, 1.6 rockers.  400 Chevy motor – maximum 1.94 intake valve.  Must have stock dished pistons, 76 cc head minimum.  Fords with 400 cubic inch must have dished pistons, 57 cc head minimum.

7.    Must run hydraulic lifters.  No Rhodes type or anti-pump up lifters.  No over size lifters.  May have screw in studs.

8.    May run stock two barrel or four barrel intake or intake #14098242, GM  marine intake on old heads.  All intakes must be strictly stock.  No porting or polishing of intake manifold anywhere.  May also run the Edelbrock performer #2101, 2104, or 2116.  All must be in stock form.

9.    Headers allowed.

a)    Must be no larger than 1 5/8 O.D.  No tuned headers.

b)   Exhaust pipe must be 30 inches past header flange.

10.           Must have stock ignition.

a)    Electronic distributor stock.  No after market distributor allowed.

b)   Ignition module must be stock appearing.

c)    No MSD systems or hot boxes.

d)   Caps and wires optional.

e)    If coil is not mounted inside distributor cap, the coil must be mounted under the hood as close to distributor as possible. No advanced kits.

 

 Sportsman Beech Bend Carburetors

1.    Carburetor – Holley #4412 or Keith Dorton series part #080583-1, Two barrel, 500 c.f.m.

a)    May change jets & power valve.  On the Keith Dorton series may also change the air bleed jets.

b)   Base plate must remain stock. 1 11/16 or 1.697.

c)    Choke butterfly may be removed.

d)   Adaptor spacer not to exceed 1 inch.  No more than 1 3/8 inch distance between the base plate and intake manifold.

e)    All air must enter through carburetor ventura.

f)     Carburetor must be mounted in center of intake.

g)    Cold air box permitted.

h)   No electrical fuel pump.  Fuel pressure gauge line must be steel braided.

Clutch

1.    No 2-speed manual transmissions.

2.    Reverse must be operational.

3.    Minimum flywheel weight of 14 pounds.

 Tires and Wheels

1.    MUST run 15 inch Towel City Slicks, 880 Hoosiers (8 inch maximum width).

2.    Eight (8) inch steel wheel maximum with any offset.  Half-inch wheel studs recommended. Tread width 65 inches center to center.

3.    All brakes must be in working order.  Rear disc brakes allowed.  After market brake pedals allowed.

Sportsman Weight

1.    Minimum weight Beech Bend Engine 3200 pounds with driver after race. 

2.    All weight (lead) must be mounted above frame/inside frame rail with a minimum of two (2) ½ inch bolts.  All weights are to be painted white with the car # painted on each piece.  Any driver that loses any lead from his car will be fined $250 payable prior to any further competition.  This rule is in effect during race day and practice days.

3.    May add weight boxes to the outside of frame rails with safety bolts in the front and rear.

4.    Maximum left side weight 55.4% with driver.

 

Anytime the track or the technical directors feel any of the rules are giving one type of car an advantage over another car, weight may be deducted or added to make a fair situation. All decisions by Beech Bend Raceway Officials will be final.
